Specifying framework of graduate profiles (Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education at all levels of study)

The profiling of all forms of study, guaranteed by the Institute of Literary and Artistic Communication, Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra (hereinafter: ILAC) is characterized by peculiarities that are supported by decades of basic research (more than half a hundred national and international research projects of which more than 90% were evaluated as excellent) and pioneering research initiatives. Their results were reflected in the profiling of graduates of all forms of the study of Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education, which is centrally based on autonomous basic research, as follows:

  1. Since the 1960s the so-called Nitra School of Interpretation (F. Miko, A. Popovič, etc.) has been formed at ILAC, which has cultivated methods of interpreting literary texts and innovatively promoted a semiotic-communicative and interdisciplinary approach to art. Thanks to the results achieved within these initiatives, it has become possible to understand the teaching of aesthetics at ILAC not only as a general-abstract reflection of art, but to shape students' competencies to solve aesthetic problems through a specific work mastered at the level of interpretive detail (from this point of view, the abilities of graduates of the study of aesthetics are equal to the competencies of students of individual types of art). The mentioned initiatives, style models (F. Miko, L. Plesník, E. Kapsová, etc.), research of the morphology of a work of art (L. Plesník, Z. Rédey, R. Beličová, etc.) and recent thematic research (M. Čechová, L. Plesník, etc.) with the tradition of interdisciplinarity (A. Popovič, E. Pariláková) provide students with tools to master all levels (style, theme, language, composition) of works of all kinds of art, as well as non-artistic aesthetic phenomena. Based on the theory of metatexts developed by A. Popovič in the 70s of the 20th century ILAC began to research and develop the issue of intertextual connections (T. Žilka, M. Malíčková, etc.). Thanks to that, students of ILAC gain the ability to understand art in interdisciplinary contexts (at the level of different kinds of art). Research on the artistic style (system of expressions) have enabled students to master the history of art not as disparate sets of singularities, but rather through a category of style (style, movement, etc.), which is specified by expressively representative artifacts. This overcame the traditional handicap of the fact-based aesthetic study of art history, and therefore students are able to handle and discuss phenomena which have not been actually memorized.
  2. The communication model of art led in the 1980s to the concept of a receptive approach to art, which took into account authentic reading needs and interests, and in the 1990s to the concept of a life-embracing aesthetics, or living culture (L. Plesník, F. Miko). Within its framework, ILAC was the first institution at the level of national basic research projects which started to focus on pop culture research (individually since the 1970s in the works of P. Liba and V. Obert, programmatically and on school-based principles since the 1990s in the works of J. Malíček, M. Malíčková, later M. Boszorád, etc.). On this platform, the teaching of aesthetics and aesthetic education at ILAC overcame the discrepancy between the prejudices burdened by the opposition between the so-called high and low art, and openly opened up to the culture which current students live authentically, and rehabilitated pop culture as an essential part of the study of aesthetics. From a didactic point of view, the concept of practical aesthetics (M. Žilková, later H. Zeleňáková, etc.) began in the 1990s to develop the above initiatives and focused on shaping students' ability to apply the principles of life-embracing aesthetics in the teaching of relevant subjects at primary and secondary schools, decisively determining their content and form nationwide.
  3. A decade ago, an internationally established subdiscipline of arch-textual thematology was formed at ILAC (M. Čechová, Ľ. Plesník, etc.). Based on it, students of aesthetics and aesthetic education learn about culturally foundational stories (myths, fairy tales, legends, basic religious narratives, etc.) and the universal story patterns contained in them, which underpin artistic / aesthetic creation in all developmental periods, including (post) postmodern and pop culture today. In addition to the above mentioned characteristic features, the assumptions that the teaching of aesthetics and aesthetic education at ILAC should focus on instrumental-operative abilities of students rather than on memorization of factual data have been strengthened.

These peculiarities (tradition, teaching based on continuous basic research), together with the fact that the teaching of aesthetics and aesthetic education at ILAC was never aimed at "mass production of graduates", got reflected in the success of its graduates.

Graduates of the study of aesthetics and (or) aesthetic education at ILAC have become successful in the academic, or pedagogical sphere, not only at primary, secondary and higher education institutions (e.g. doc. Mgr. Łukasz P. Wojciechowski, PhD., doc. PhDr. Milan Banyár, PhD.), but also in various educational institutions and non-profit organizations (Mgr. Viera Lasáková, née Chrenková), in various cultural and social institutions and centers (Mgr. Lucia Vadelová, Mgr. Marek Vatraľ, PhD., Mgr. Richard Kováčik, PhD., Erik Vilím, PhD.), as editors or editors-in-chief of regional newspapers (Mgr. Alexandra Janigová) and national magazines (Mgr. Alexandra Paulovičová) and also as creative artists who, thanks to the study of aesthetics, theoretically anchored their artistic activities, expanded and deepened the thematic and methodological frameworks of their work (Mgr. Peter Oravec, PhD., Michal Hvorecký, Alena Pajtinková).

Each doctoral student of aesthetics submits a UGA research project and usually participates in national basic research projects. Most doctoral theses completed at ILAC (their parts) are published in the form of a peer-reviewed domestic or foreign scientific monograph, chapter or study in a peer-reviewed scientific periodical, and annually at least one diploma thesis, bachelor thesis or other type of thesis (theses by Mgr. Nikola Danišová, PhD. and Mgr. Bernadette Pažitná) are published in this way.

c) - The study plan generally states:

The study plan of the doctoral study programme Aesthetics is specified in the structure of the study part (compulsory courses - compulsory optional courses - optional courses), scientific part and other activities. Profile courses form the core of the part of compulsory courses and half of the offer of compulsory-optional courses and have methodological character.

Compulsory profile courses are defined by a cycle of four courses focusing on methodological starting points (Methodological Specifics of the Nitra School of Interpretation - Reception Poetics and Pragmatic Aesthetics; Methodological Specifics of the Nitra School of Interpretation – Intertextuality) and the developing framework of Nitra Aesthetics (Methodological Specifics of the Nitra School of Interpretation - Popular Culture, Methodological Specifics of the Nitra School of Interpretation - Arch-Textual Thematology), in almost all cases lectured also in relation to world conceptions and always with a link to specific interpretive material from the field of individual arts and mass media.

As a result, interpretive skills are strengthened in direct interaction with the expansion of thematic frameworks and the deepening of theoretical and methodological knowledge. In the part of compulsory optional courses, the system of autonomous Nitra aesthetics is supplemented by three courses, which contextualizes it in broader contexts, connections and confrontations of individual aesthetic, artistic and cultural concepts.

In the case of a student who has not studied Nitra aesthetics in the first two degrees, they can strengthen their interpretive skills by attending interpretive disciplines in the part of optional courses (conducted as Additional Courses of Doctoral Study). A graduate of a master's degree in a related field can also supplement their knowledge of art history (in the field of artistic styles or aesthetic thinking) in this way.

Major part of the doctoral student's studies (more than a third of the total credit load) are linked to their scientific performance and includes mandatory mobility activities, active participation in projects and publishing activities with the obligation to publish during their studies (outputs are specified in the document https://www.ff.ukf.sk/images/dokumenty/doktorandske_studium/dff-ds-druhy-vystupov-kategorie-A-podla-kriterii-ak.pdf).

The module of doctoral studies, which is provided by the Institute of Literary and Artistic Communication in cooperation with the Institute of Theatre and Film Research, SAS Bratislava, is a continuation of the compulsory block of subjects of the aesthetics curriculum, which is common, and extends the study frameworks in one block of compulsory elective and one block of elective subjects. In doing so, it focuses mainly on synthetic theatre and film art. Gesamtkunstwerk of theatre and film is a suitable and versatile tool of connection with aesthetics; it includes many forms of art in all its audiovisual variability. This link is offered in a series of compulsory elective courses Methodology of Theatre Studies, Overview of Theatre and Drama Theories, Overview of Aesthetic Film Theories and Aesthetics of Documentary Film, which provide a panoramic view of the art forms studied and a link to aesthetics as an umbrella discipline.

The study does not omit historiographical topics, which give the acquired theoretical skills a foundation in historical facts and the acquired knowledge is therefore complemented by other, more narrowly conceived and genre-defined topics, such as Multicultural Aspects of World Cinema, Aesthetic Diversity of the Interwar Avant-Garde, Slovak Theatre of the Second Half of the 20th Century. In addition to the theoretical issues of aesthetic study, the teaching also focuses on the living arts of acting and directing, the artistic aspects in stage design and the literary aspects in dramatic text. In addition to the more complex theoretical and methodological issues of theatre and film, the study offers the opportunity to deepen the understanding of the specific features of the construction of a work of art and its individual components in the courses Analysis and Interpretation of Staging, Theories of Acting and Aesthetics of Staging Form in Opera. The students in this study should also acquire the ability to perceive how issues not only of aesthetics but also of philosophy, sociology, psychology (partially represented in the themes of each subject) are inevitably connected to the living arts, which further broadens knowledge and contributes to the graduate's all-round and general education.

In the other subjects, which are related to the overall framework of the study of aesthetics, the history of individual arts and their genres are part of the study, thus creating a broader base of knowledge from practice, which also provides a defined field of reference, application, verification and comparison in the study and formulation of scientific outputs. Therefore, the study programme includes additional elective courses, on which the student can choose his/her own direction of study according to his/her own intentions and needs: Poetics and Trends of Contemporary Theatre, Slovak Documentary Film, Contemporary Slovak Drama, Selected Chapters from the Theory and History of Television Drama, Selected Chapters from the History of Film, Selected Chapters from the Opera History, Actors of the Slovak Theatre, Reconstruction of Theatre Production, Theory and Practice of Theatre Criticism. The skills acquired by the centrally compulsory elective subjects are thus complemented by a range of other areas which ensure that the study programme is sufficiently saturated both educationally and in terms of fulfilling the spontaneous interest of the listeners in the given artistic field.

The ILAC library also contains scientific works and publications of ILAC employees (former and current), diploma and bachelor's theses, works of Students Research Conference, etc.

b) - Characteristics of the study programme information management (access to study literature according to Course information sheets, access to information databases and other information sources, information technologies, etc.).

CPU employs the following systems, including their value added for managing, storing and evaluating information:

Academic Information System (AIS2) – is currently used to record complex information about the study programme (study plans, course information sheets, academic profiles of teachers and student records, including their admission procedure, studies, final theses and state exams). The CPU also uses the AIS to prepare academic schedules and conduct student evaluations of programmes, teachers and studies. Data from the AIS are uploaded to the Central Register of Students, the Central Register of Theses and Dissertations and the register of universities - PortalVS.sk. At the management level, the AIS serves as a resource for reporting teaching activities and measuring the educational performance of departments/institutes and their offer of study programmes. The information collected in the AIS is the fundamental source of information for the accreditation and creation of the offer of study programmes.

Document Management (DOC) - (document management system) serves as an authorized zone for employees and students of the university and, along with the intranet section of the website, provides access to current documents (internal regulations of the university and faculty, forms, decisions of the rector, deans, e.g., concerning scholarships, software (licensed and open-source), working materials of management units, etc.).

Library Lnformation System (KIS) supports the services of the university library. The record of publishing activities is operated within the library information system, while it allows access to publishing activities for each employee both at the level of insertion and at the level of obtaining publication and citation outputs. The obtained data serve as a source for the evaluation of employees and workplaces in the field of publishing performance and at the same time represent a source for the Central Register of Publishing Activities. Study support is provided through study materials, which are provided to students through several channels. The primary source is the newly built University Library in the CPU Zobor Campus with its study rooms on Hodžová and Kraskova Streets.

E-learning portals are a secondary source of study materials. In September 2007, LMS Moodle was implemented as a university-wide e-learning portal in a structure corresponding to the structure of the university (faculties divided into departments). The edu.ukf.sk portal is intended to support the teaching of accredited subjects. The number of users of the EDU system exceeds 13,500 users per year (of which about a third are active), which can be considered as a smooth implementation of e-learning in the university environment. The successful implementation of structural fund projects involving the construction of e-learning courses was also evidence of this fact.

Within the project NISPEZ University Library of CPU through CVTI SR provided access to the following electronic information databases: SCOPUS, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, ProQuest Central, ScienceDirect, Knovel Library, Web of Knowledge - Current Contents Connect (CCC), Web of Knowledge - Essential Science Indicators (ESI), Web of Knowledge - Journal Citation Reports (JCR), Web of Knowledge - MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge - Web of Science (WOS), Web of Knowledge - Korean Journal Database, Web of Knowledge - Russian Science Citation Index, Web of Knowledge - SciELO Citation Index.

Thanks to cooperation with the Slovak National Library in Martin, University Library of CPU had access to the databases of the American company EBSCO Publishing: Academic Search Complete, Agricola, AHFS Consumer Medication Information, Business Source Premier, ERIC, GreenFile, Health Source - ConsumerEdition, Health Source: Nursing / Academic Edition , Humanities International Complete, Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts, MasterFILE Premier, MEDLINE with Full Text, Newspaper Source, Regional Business News, Teacher Reference Center.

There is an extensive network of specialized ICT-equipped classrooms at CPU. In addition, students have freely accessible computer boxes in the corridors, in all university buildings. CPU currently has 790 PCs for students. There are also specialized classrooms available for students (special language classrooms equipped with software for translators; 2 classrooms equipped with complete interpreting equipment; specialized audiovisual; research, recording and communication center and university creative studio).

An important step in the field of e-learning is the integration of a system for recording and broadcasting lectures, which is used in 5 lecture rooms within individual faculties. One lecture room arranged in this way is also located on the premises of the Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra. In addition to increasing content accessibility, this technology will also provide space for promotion and communication with the general public.

The basis of the technical infrastructure of data and telecommunication networks is a 10 Gb / s optical network, built within the framework of Structural Funds projects (Modernization of infrastructure to improve the quality of education and Development of infrastructure with a focus on ICT - a condition for education in the 3rd millennium). Thanks to the resources from the structural funds, the coverage of the wireless signal, which is currently available in all university buildings, has also been expanded. CPU currently has 113 wireless access points.

The operation of the computer network and the operation of information systems is ensured by several dozen servers, gradually expanded thanks to resources from the Structural Funds. At present, information systems run in most cases on virtual systems, which saves energy costs and increases the security of systems against intrusions.

As part of the provision of basic information support for the study, an e-mail system was set up for students at the university's own expense, through which each student obtains their own e-mail account for official communication with the institution upon enrollment. Students are informed not only by e-mail communication, communication via the websites of workplaces and distribution of messages in the AIS system, but also via large screens integrated into the information system of the university. This technology was implemented within the project Infrastructure Development with a focus on ICT - a condition for education in the 3rd millennium and its goal is to provide current information, multimedia presentations and presentations of individual workplaces.

An important step in improving the university quality was to get involved in the Eduroam project, the basic idea of which is to allow students and academic staff to connect to a computer network in another academic institution without having to register or obtain access data. Connecting to the network requires only the username and password that the user uses in the home institution. We anticipate use by both university visitors and our students and staff during stays at other universities.

As part of the increasing of the quality of education and research, an extension of information systems has been built in recent years, the aim of which is to map the activity, productivity and results of the university's staff. The construction of this managerial superstructure resulted in closer cooperation between the individual systems and the construction of an integrative portal simplifying access to the individual university information systems.

The presentation of the university is provided by its website. It has undergone several changes in recent years. In the first phase, the design was changed and clarified, and during the second, a content management tool was deployed, enabling simple and user-friendly content maintenance and updating. Subsequently, the site management system was implemented at the faculties and other parts of the university. A secondary information source intended mainly for students is the presentation of the activities of the university and the faculty on several social networks, makes the access to information to the target group faster and more efficient.

c) - Characteristics and extent of distance education applied in the study programme with the assignment to courses. Access, manuals of e-learning portals. Procedures for the transition from contact teaching to distance learning.

Teachers at the 3rd degree of the aesthetics study programme use online video conferencing systems (especially https://meet.ukf.sk/) as well as the UKF Moodle E-learning portal and other applications (e.g. MS Teams) The faculty provides all trainers with special training to work with distance learning courses.

Teachers additionally use the e-learning portal in the standard full-time mode and in their e-learning courses at EDU they upload study materials (specialized literature, records of lectures, additional exercises, case studies, etc.). In the case of distance mode during the examination period, the E-learning portal UKF Moodle offers various examination models, which contain protective mechanisms against possible misbehaviour of the examined student and at the same time help to objectify the evaluation process.

The effectiveness of distance contact through the meet.ukf.sk system was also confirmed at the 3rd level, especially in contact with part-time students; consultations can be carried out regularly, as required by the doctoral student or the supervisor's requirements. The lectures themselves and the subsequent consultations on them can be implemented to a large extent through an online videoconferencing system; for meetings of a small number of people, the system is a very effective solution. Each of the lectured subjects can be conducted in a hybrid form with a large representation of distance learning, or conducted by distance learning in full.

d) - Institution partners in providing educational activities for the study programme and the characteristics of their participation.

The Institute of Literary and Artistic Communication develops long-term and continuous cooperation with domestic cultural, and cultural and educational institutions (Nitra Gallery - practice, but also in connection with the subject of the study programme Gallery Interactions, Slovak Philharmonic - practice, RTVS - practice, etc.), but also with domestic and foreign academic workplaces and institutions (e.g. Department of Aesthetics, Charles University in Prague, Department of Literary Culture and Slavonic Studies, University of Pardubice, Institute of Aesthetics and Art Culture, University of Prešov, etc.), including on the platform of philosophical-methodological seminars and guest lectures available to both ILAC and Faculty of Arts, CPU staff and students.

In recent years ILAC intensively cooperates with the Slovak Association for Aesthetics, whose members are several ILAC employees (Mgr. Peter Brezňan, PhD. is its vice-chairman). Finally, on the platform of this cooperation, ILAC participated as a co-organizer in the international conference Aesthetics of the Center and Periphery - Center and Periphery of Aesthetics in 2019, repeatedly participated in the cultural and educational project With Art in Schools (a series of discussions organized at secondary schools with guests in the field of art) and also in the Aesthetics without Borders mobility project. As part of this, ILAC managed to develop very valuable contacts with colleagues from the university workplaces in Helsinki and Rome.

From other workplaces or institutions, cooperation with the Slovak Film Institute or the Institute of Theater and Film Studies of the Slovak Academy of Sciences must be mentioned. As far as university workplaces are concerned, ILAC has close contacts with the University of Hradec Králové (Department of Cultural and Religious Studies) or Masaryk University of Brno (Aesthetics Seminar). ILAC also cooperates with these and other workplaces within the Erasmus + mobility programme on the platform of bilateral agreements.

In recent years, cooperation with the Nation’s Memory Institute and the Na zelenej lúke civic association is also worth mentioning. While the main output of the first mentioned collaboration was a weekly cycle of professional lectures and discussions Art on Freedom ´89 (November 2019), the main output of the second was a cycle of 6 reading workshops for CPU students and students of grammar schools I read about oppression (September 2020 to June 2021).

e) - Characteristics of the possibilities for social, sports, cultural, spiritual and social activities.

Social life, sports, cultural, spiritual life of CPU students is part of the CPU Long-Term Plan for 2019-2025 and the CPU Faculty of Arts Long-Term Plan for 2019-2022. The Hall of Residence CPU Nitra is home to the University Creative Studio. It is an integral cultural rendezvous point for the University students and their ensembles to rehearse and stage theatrical productions, various scenic projects and cultural events. The Creative Studio is also used for educational purposes (workshops, seminars, trainings) within the artistic and artistic-educational study programmes at the University.

Ponitran, the oldest folk ensemble at the University, focuses on traditional Slovak folklore with special interest in the Ponitrie Region. The mission of this ensemble is to evolve spare-time activities of the students, follow up on the traditional Slovak culture, interpret it artistically and collect the folklore material from various Slovak regions, but especially from the Nitra and Tekov Regions.

The VYDI Student Theatre was founded in 1992. During an academic year, student actors rehearse one production that is staged for a domestic audience in the University Creative Studio of the Faculty. They also take part in various regional shows or thematic festivals. The participation of students in this body is not limited only to theatrical productions, but a diverse range of variable activities also takes place: improligy (improvisation leagues), stand up performances, street parades, Santa's parties, majálesy (student rag in May), cabaret, matriculation, workshops, etc.

The civic association JA a MY organises cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, scientific conferences, seminars, discussion forums, round tables, debates, as well as alternative art projects in the national and international context, with an emphasis on supporting the region's all-round artistic development. The association supports budding artists, publicists and scholars of fine art in order to enable them to make a public presentation of their creative and scientific activities. The best-known event organised under the auspice of this association is The Petr Scherhaufer Festival.

The Hungarian CPU Choir successfully represents the University on domestic and foreign concert stages, choir festivals and competitions. At The Kodályové dni Festival in Galanta, the national qualification competition of choirs, our choir has repeatedly won the Zlaté pásmo award.
