Graduate general profile
The graduate becomes a professionally and methodologically based specialist in the study programme: Translation Studies. He/she has relevant knowledge of general translation theory in all its complementary components. He/she masters the methodology and methods of translation research and can apply them flexibly in a range of translation genres. The graduate, who is characterised by independent, analytical and synthetic-creative thinking, can fundamentally present his/her own expert opinions in scientific forums and convincingly argue against the views of other researchers. He/she has creative potential to seek innovative and original solutions to research challenges. In interpretation and presentation of own results, she/she fully reflects the socio-cultural, scientific and ethical dimension of scientific work.
Theoretical knowledge
The graduate has an extensive theoretical background with interdisciplinary overlap, which allows him/her to see and solve professional problems in a broader causal context. In theoretical terms, he/she knows the genesis of the field in a synchronic and diachronic perspective and in its paradigmatic transformations; in descriptive terms he/she understands the mental processes of translation/interpretation and perceives translation activities in sociocultural contexts. Based on critical reflection, the knowledge gained via theoretical studies helps the graduate to creatively process, develop and formulate own hypotheses and research strategies, and deliver original solutions to translation problems. At the same time, he/she can syncretise the current foreign, mainly functional and systemically oriented translatology concepts with the still current scientific message of the Slovak (Nitra) Translation School and further develop its professional potential creatively.
Practical skills
As an expert in translation communication, the graduate commands translation and interpreting activities at linguistic, reference and pragmatic level. Within the working languages, he/she can uncover the reference background of existing textological and sociocultural relations in the original milieu, and thus create a pragmatic communication balance in the target translation. The graduate masters a wide range of interpretation strategies, including hermeneutic approaches to the text analysis and can critically reflect literary phenomena. He/she is orientated in semasiological and onomasiological approaches to the lexicographic and terminographic work and applies them in practice. Not only is he/she able to employ the latest research methods in translatology or modify them creatively to the conditions of his/her own research activity but he/she can design, validate and implement new research methods into practice. Having mastered the academic skills and principles of academic writing, he/she is able to (i) formulate his/her ideas clearly and logically, (ii) back up an argument, (iii) and use proper terminology and all the parameters of the professional style in a clever way.
Additional knowledge and skills
The graduate can embark on scientific work autonomously and efficiently but is also ready for teamwork. He/she has the prerequisites for a creative formulation and programming of scientific tasks and can manage own research, including the organisation, coordination or management of new research projects. He/she has relevant knowledge from related disciplines, from cognitive linguistics, psychology, culturology and sociology and can use this interdisciplinary knowledge functionally in order to address a specific translatology problem in the complexity of its relationship.

Based on expertise and skills, graduates of Translation Studies are ready to apply for scientific-pedagogical, research and professional positions in prestigious institutions both in Slovakia and abroad. In all programmes provided by the Department of Translation Studies we regularly monitor the selected indicators of graduates’ employability.
Based on comprehensive results, 97.7 % of our alumni are currently employed, while most of them (53.5 %) found employment immediately after completion of their studies and almost a third (27.9 %) even while studying.
Graduates of doctoral studies prove competent: (i) in domestic scientific and scientific-educational institutions, as well as in professions and activities directly related to their specialisation (e.g. translation and subtitling of films, documents for dubbing, interpretation at negotiations, translation of professional texts, literary translation, editorial activity), (ii) in European and national institutions (iii) or in professions requiring a good knowledge of language, intercultural, translation skills or market, technological and personal competences acquired during their studies (e.g. software localisation, project management, communication with foreign clients or work in the field of media, education and culture, etc.).

The attached supporting opinions of various entities of the profession prove a long-term and regular cooperation with the Department. The content and subject matter of the study programme consistently reflect the requirements for the preparation of excellent researchers and scientific-pedagogical staff in Slovakia, but also in the international context. Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra, which delivers the study programme, maintains a close partnership with research and scientific-educational institutions in Slovakia and abroad. It fully supports all educational activities of students aimed at developing their research, pedagogical, project and organizational skills. In addition to the highly profiled study and scientific part of the study programme, the students are also involved in the organisation of prestigious international scientific events (e.g. 10 years of the international conference of doctoral students of translatology (Tradícia a inovácia v translatologickom výskume / Tradition and Innovation in Translation Studies Research), the prestigious international conference Translation Interpreting Culture), project activities (projects focused on research in the field of translation history, machine translation, audio-visual translation and accessibility, social inclusion and interpretation/translation in the public service) and they are encouraged to participate in international research networks (e.g. International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies, European Society for Studies in Screen Translation). These activities facilitate experience, contacts and feedback even from foreign stakeholders, which is crucial for our students. The Department receives regular feedback from employers and partner institutions and its findings are reflected in the study plan.

The Faculty of Arts CPU in Nitra has procedures and tools in place to approve, monitor and evaluate the implementation of study programmes, concerning (i) the definition of formal procedures for the approval of study programmes by bodies other than those implementing them; (ii) the development of study programmes delivered at the Faculty; (iii) monitoring the availability of appropriate teaching resources for the implementation of study programmes; (iv) formulating the expected learning outcomes and checking the actual outcomes in relation to the graduate’s profile; (v) monitoring student achievement and educational attainment; (vi) regular evaluation and review of study programmes; (vii) the involvement of students in study programme evaluation activities and ensuring feedback from employers, labour market representatives and other relevant organisations regarding the graduates’ employability.
Curriculum design of a study programme, including its content and form, is based on (i) the description of the fields of study and accreditation criteria/standards; (ii) the professional and qualification potential of creative workers and reflects the interest of applicants and the needs of the labour market. The availability of teaching resources for the implementation of study programmes is ensured by the faculty in cooperation with its departments and institutes by means of purchases of professional literature, editorial work of the faculty, as well as preparation of e-learning educational courses. The achievement of the expected learning outcomes, as set out in course information sheets, is evaluated in (i) the student assessment questionnaires, (ii) the periodic evaluation reports on educational activities and the state exams success rate, (iii) as well as the analysis of evaluations recorded in AIS. The regular evaluation and review of study programmes is delivered out by the person responsible for the study programme, department staff, through student assessment questionnaires and quality assurance bodies at the faculty and university level.
Teachers involved in the implementation of the study programme regularly update the content of their subjects with the knowledge acquired from participating in scientific research projects. They publish the results of their scientific research activities in indexed periodicals, monographs and teaching texts, which serve as study literature for students of the study programme. The results of their scientific research and publication activities are presented and promoted in scientific and professional events aimed at the professional community and students. The faculty receives feedback on the graduates’ employability success rate from employers or graduates by means of surveys initiated at level of faculty management and its departments/institutes.

The study programme is designed to reflect the key areas and backgrounds in the scientific research of Translation Studies from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. It offers the student methodological and strategic instruments necessary for the performance of this activity in the domestic and international context. At the same time, the study plan reflects pragmatic aspects of academic work (publication, project, teaching) as well as the principles of transparency and ethics in scientific and research activities. As part of the consolidation, the student representatives were asked to cooperate on the study programme modifications, so as to reflect the key needs, ideas and recommendations of the students of the study programme. Discussions with representatives took place on a case-by-case basis discussing the essential aspects in academic preparation (content of the courses, requirements for evaluation and their clear definition, strategies in research and project activities). At the end, the findings have been reflected in the study programme: the contents of the courses have been updated and recorded in the course information sheets as well.
A list and characteristics of study programme classrooms and their technical equipment:
The study programme in question is delivered in lecture and seminar rooms equipped with computers with installed relevant software and other didactic aids. By default, lecture rooms are equipped with a desktop computer with Internet connection and webcam, a data projector, a projector screen, a white and interactive boards and a lectern. In addition, large lecture rooms are also equipped with a sound system with fixed/wireless microphone, as well as a system for recording and broadcasting lectures. This technology, apart from promoting an e-learning form of teaching, increases the accessibility of content and increases possibilities for the promotion of specific educational activities among students and Faculty staff. For this reason, TV panels are installed in the common areas, displaying recorded individual lectures, leisure time events or live streams from lecture rooms. Seminar rooms are also equipped with a sound system, a desktop computer connected to the Internet, a web camera and a data projector. The maintenance and continuous upgrading and replacement of the material and technical equipment is financed mainly from structural funds and research projects.
The Department of Translation Studies is located in the building of Faculty of Arts CPU in Nitra, Štefánikova 67 primarily on the second floor. The department and its staff have 6 office rooms and 11 desktop PCs, 7 external hard drives, 1 portable data projector, 3 multifunctional devices, 9 printers, 1 scanner, 1 binder, 1 cutter, 2 shredder, 2 video cameras, 3 replicators, 1 tablet, 1 laminator. All office rooms have a telephone connection, and the department computers are connected to the Internet, which allows communication with students and the public at a level corresponding to the today’s standards. The doctoral study programme Translation Studies is delivered at the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra. The Department of Translation Studies shares with other department common lecture rooms ST129 at Štefánikova 67 and P6, P9 and C-305 at Tr. A. 1/ two cutting-edge interpreting laboratories with 11 fixed and 2 portable interpreting booths. Each booth is equipped with a monitor and computer connected to the Internet. The control desk is equipped with a central monitor and recording system for the evaluation of student interpreting performance. The interpreting laboratory is an essential space for training all interpreting techniques: simultaneous interpreting, pilotage, chuchotage, online and consecutive interpreting. The technical equipment allows teachers to work with 22 students and it stimulates the real-life conditions of common practice. At the same time, the students also acquire teamwork in the booth, which is essential for the professional performance of interpreting activities. In addition to interpreting booths, the Department also has 40 mobile stations (IC — receiver), which are used for the training of global simulations imitating authentic interpreting situations and real interpreting at various seminars, workshops and conferences where our students interpret.
2/ Specialised computer classroom equipped with 21 computers with installed software used in translation practice (SDL Trados, Memsource), software for text editing (ABBYY FineReader), spelling and grammar tools. The computers have installed translation memories (Trados, Systran), terminology databases and dictionaries (Lexicon 2002, Lingea) and a voice recognition software. Freely available subtitling software and subtitling software for sensory disadvantaged audiences (Subtitle Workshop, Aegisub) are also installed. At the same time, in 2021 we obtained licenses for cloud tools enhancing skills and competences - work with multimodal audio-visual text (Zoo Digital), workflow and project management (XTRF) or corpora (Sketch engine) — students can access these tools from home and university premises as well. Within the program, students have the opportunity to gain an overview of electronic tools that will allow them to streamline translation work, but above all prepare them for the conditions of the labour market.

As of October 28, 2020, the CPU Library collections comprised 323,751 items. In 2020, the CPU Library subscribed to 195 periodicals, out of which 72 were foreign titles. The University Library has 285,199 library units at disposal for its readers, of which 61,812 are final and qualification theses.

In addition to the library collections of the University Library, the staff and students of the Department of Translation Studies can access a study room at Hodžova St. 1, which is part of the University Library, and a department library that serves the needs of scientific-pedagogical staff of the Department, as well as students. In accordance with strategic and operational goals, CPU employs the following systems, including their value added for managing, storing and evaluating information:
1. Academic Information System (AIS2) – is currently used to record complex information about the study programme (study plans, course information sheets, academic profiles of teachers and student records, including their admission procedure, studies, final theses and state exams). CPU also uses the AIS to prepare academic schedules and conduct student evaluations of programmes, teachers and studies. Data from the AIS are uploaded to the Central Register of Students, the Central Registry of Theses and Dissertations and the register of universities - PortalVS.sk. At the management level, the AIS serves as a resource for reporting and assessment of teaching activities of departments/institutes and their offer of study programmes. The information collected in the AIS is the fundamental source of information for the accreditation and creation of the offer of study programmes.
2. Document Management (DOC) - (document management system) serves as an authorised zone for employees and students of the university and, along with the intranet section of the website, it provides access to current documents (internal regulations of the university and faculty, forms, decisions of the rector, deans, e.g., concerning scholarships, software (licensed and open-source), working materials of management units, etc).

All information systems communicate with the user through a secured channel. In order to simplify access and minimize the possibility of credential theft, a system of central authentication has been deployed. It stores the access data of employees and students via LDAP and enables their verification upon request from all information systems.
The system is linked to the financial and personnel system (SOFIA), and thus upon termination of employment the employee’s access to the information systems and facilities of the university is automatically denied and, vice-versa, granted upon onboarding.
Our participation in the Eduroam project represents a significant modernization, as this infrastructure enables students and academic staff to connect to a computer network at another academic institution without having to register or obtain additional credentials. Therefore, connecting to the network requires only the username and password that the user owns from the home institution. This network can be used by both university visitors and our students and staff. The main communication channel presenting and promoting the university is the university website.
CPU has built and continues to innovate its own ICT infrastructure and information systems (IS) that are integrated parts of information support processes with a focus on research, education and management. Their implementation and operation are managed by the University CIKT (Centre for ICT), ensuring compliance with the University long-term intentions and strategic goals. Regarding their application, individual technologies and systems are used as follows: project and task management (IS Projects, SAP system, MIS Performance indicators); teaching and improvement activities support provided at the level of knowledge management (KIS, University library databases, some educational materials are provided by faculty staff via e-learning courses); didactic support and improvement activities (available computer classrooms in each faculty); Internet access (all facilities are almost completely covered by wireless connection and all fixed computers provide Internet connection).
Interaction with students is ensured through AIS, e-mail communication, as well as web presentations of the university, its faculties and other organisational units. In selected periods, the University increasingly promotes its activities and study possibilities by means of print media, workshops and open days. Sharing and providing information at the level of educational content (e-learning, library services, and education management) is accessible nonstop through electronic services. All the university information systems are linked to the unified user management (LDAP) system, allowing access to all systems through the same credentials.
An example of minimizing the environmental burden is the electronic monitoring of time and attendance, incapacity for work, business trips and overtime using contactless chip cards or the Time and Attendance Software (WATT). Another example of minimizing the environmental burden is the Order Management System (oSYS), designed for internal procurement of goods and services within CPU through mass collection of information from individual organisational units with the possibility of approving individual orders in accordance with the hierarchical structure of CPU. Employees may access payslip or other information regarding remuneration in the ESS system.

The CPU e-learning portal provides automatic access to published e-learning courses for all CPU students. Users can monitor the fulfilment of individual tasks and assignments and hold discussions in forums. Moreover, the system provides teachers with sophisticated online testing options.

Video Conferencing System (meet)
The system enables distance learning and student evaluation, as well as online state examinations at the time of controlled distance learning. Moreover, it provides online consultation sessions with students and other study and group activities. All communication via the CPU Meet application is fully encrypted.
MS Teams, an application from Office 365 package accessible to all teachers and students alike, is another suitable platform for distance learning.
Scientific cooperation with other workplaces within and outside the university generates valuable scientific background ensuring the study programme and also motivates staff to improve their educational activities in view of the current needs of the profession and social practice. The Department has valuable contacts with many institutions at home and abroad and this cooperation develops the scientific and educational potential of the study programme in question. Cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation (DGT), which is based on the inclusion of Master’s programmes in the prestigious international network of the European Master’s in Translation Network (EMT), but whose results are further passed on to doctoral studies — in particular, in the form of cooperation on research activities within the Network’s working groups (namely: translation and interpretation in the public service, audio-visual translation and accessibility, strategies in the translation direction L2). This cooperation brings close contact with prestigious programmes in Europe that can be useful for doctoral students in their research, project and publishing activities. Cooperation in the key research and education activities, notably in the fields of audio-visual translation and technology, media availability and inclusion (University of Vienna (AT, University of Leiden (NL), University of Sorbonne in Paris (FR), University of Middlesex (UK), University of Macrat (IT) and Ionian University (GR); as well as in the field of intercultural communication, integration and interpretation (University of Alcala (ES), Institute of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague (CZ), University of Amsterdam (NL), Free University in Brussels (BE), University of Surrey (UK), University of Vilnius (LT), University of Warsaw (PL) and University of Genoa (IT) has brought significant results.
The Department intensively collaborates with the Institute of World Literature SAS in Bratislava in several joint scientific, research and educational activities. A series of publications and the organisation of prestigious conferences, such as Translation, Interpreting and Culture are some of the results of close partnership with the Faculty of Arts UMB in Banská Bystrica, the Faculty of Arts CU in Bratislava, the Institute of World Literature SAS and the Institute of Slovak Literature SAS. The results of these activities lead to innovation and a high level of training programmes offered.
In addition to academic institutions, the Department of Translation Studies in the delivery of its study programmes cooperates with representatives of the market or cultural sector.
In addition, the partnership with the Association of Translation Companies of Slovakia (professional internships and practice, invited lectures, participation in teaching, joint educational activities) or cooperation with prestigious cultural events, such as the International Film Festival One World (knowledge-sharing, research potential and practically oriented activities of doctoral students of Translation Studies) is highly beneficial.

The Hall of Residence CPU Nitra is home to the University Creative Studio. It is an integral cultural rendezvous point for the University students and their ensembles to rehearse and stage theatrical productions, various scenic projects and cultural events. The Creative Studio is also used for educational purposes (workshops, seminars, trainings) within the artistic and artistic-educational study programmes at the University.
Ponitran, the oldest folk ensemble at the University, focuses on traditional Slovak folklore with special interest in the Ponitrie Region. The mission of this ensemble is to evolve spare-time activities of the students, follow up on the traditional Slovak culture, interpret it artistically and collect the folklore material from various Slovak regions, but especially from the Nitra and Tekov Regions.
The VYDI Student Theatre was founded in 1992. During an academic year, student actors rehearse one production that is staged for a domestic audience in the University Creative Studio of the Faculty. They also take part in various regional shows or thematic festivals. The participation of students in this body is not limited only to theatrical productions, but a diverse range of variable activities also takes place: improligy (improvisation leagues), stand up performances, street parades, Santa's parties, majálesy (student rag in May), cabaret, matriculation, workshops, etc.
The civic association JA a MY organises cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, scientific conferences, seminars, discussion forums, round tables, debates, as well as alternative art projects in the national and international context, with an emphasis on supporting the region's all-round artistic development. The association supports budding artists, publicists and scholars of fine art in order to enable them to make a public presentation of their creative and scientific activities. The best-known event organised under the auspice of this association is The Petr Scherhaufer Festival.
The Hungarian CPU Choir successfully represents the University on domestic and foreign concert stages, choir festivals and competitions. At The Kodályové dni Festival in Galanta, the national qualification competition of choirs, our choir has repeatedly won the Zlaté pásmo award. The members organise regular concerts and its goal is to cultivate and further revive Kodály's traditions, as well as the dissemination of Hungarian choral culture, primarily among the university youth. In addition to individual sports, the sports activities of CPU students are focused especially on team sports. The following sports clubs represent the sport life at CPU: Volley Project, BKM Youth Basketball Club, Taekwondo and hockey team Philosophers Nitra.
Many events, extracurricular activities and social initiatives are also offered by the Department itself, such as regularly organised educational events (11 editions of the event for translation Creative translation reflections, 4 years of Summer School of Audio-visual Translation, Summer School of Interpretation), as well as informal meetings (e.g. Christmas meeting of the Department with students).

The University Pastoral Centre of Paul Strauss in Nitra (UPC) was founded in December 2008. Its main aim is to provide pastoral care and spiritual guidance to the students and staff of the Nitra universities, other institutions and university halls of residence. (www.upcnitra.sk).
The Student Centre (SC) offers advice, counselling and other services to support students’ extracurricular activities. The content of learning, individual methods and procedures within all programmes implemented at the Department of Translation Studies are regularly adapted to the current requirements of practice, as we are very particular about the complexity of the profile of our graduates.
However, we are also interested in continuous feedback from students, to which we try to respond effectively. For this reason, at our Department we regularly conduct a survey on the assessment of education process:

In the current survey, students were asked to assess the individual components of the education process on a scale from 0 (worst) to 5 (best). Many students agreed that some aspects were more difficult for them to assess in the light of the current pandemic situation, and since some of them are only at the beginning of their studies, they did not have many possibilities to compare them with face-to-face teaching or have not yet completed a large part of the practical seminars. Nevertheless, in the survey, students have highlighted the most practically oriented subjects. Their contribution and relevance from the point of view of the study field were assessed on average by 3.8 points and the expertise of the educators providing them marked 4.2 points. In individual feedbacks, many students appreciated the teaching by educators with extensive experience of translation and interpretation in practice. They also expressed their overall satisfaction (average 3.9 p.) with extracurricular events and activities offered by the Department and the level of educators’ communication with students (3.8 p.). Of course, we attempt to respond as much as possible to the teaching moments, which are more problematic from the point of view of students, thus improving our cooperation at the Department, the satisfaction of students of individual programmes, as well as the employability of graduates.
